Urgent Update: 2 Dead in Washington National Guard Shooting
URGENT UPDATE: Two members of the West Virginia National Guard have tragically died following a shooting incident near the White House earlier today. The shocking event occurred at the busy intersection of 17th and H Streets, just two blocks northwest of the White House.
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey confirmed the deaths in a social media post, stating, “We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.” Reports indicate that the suspect, who is currently in custody, was also shot and is receiving treatment for injuries that are not life-threatening.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as emergency responders rushed to transport all three victims to the hospital. The Joint DC Task Force and the Metropolitan Police Department were quickly on the scene, establishing a perimeter with police tape as helicopters hovered overhead.
The gravity of the situation has drawn a response from President Donald Trump, who issued a statement from Florida, warning that the “animal” responsible for the attack “will pay a very steep price.” He expressed his condolences, stating, “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement.”
The presence of the National Guard in the capital has been a contentious issue, with ongoing debates about the use of military forces in urban areas. The shooting raises urgent questions about the safety of National Guard members during their deployment, which has included patrolling neighborhoods and participating in various public safety efforts.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also shared his sorrow on social media, saying, “My heart breaks for the victims of this horrific shooting.” Local officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, are actively monitoring the investigation and its implications for public safety.
As details continue to emerge, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. This developing story is likely to have significant repercussions, both politically and socially, in the coming days.
