Thanksgiving Reflections: De Vinck Shares His Perpetual Gratitude
URGENT UPDATE: In a heartfelt reflection on Thanksgiving, De Vinck emphasizes the importance of gratitude and connection in a world often marked by division. As he celebrates this year, he echoes the sentiments of past U.S. Presidents and urges Americans to recognize their blessings.
De Vinck’s poignant message comes as the nation prepares for Thanksgiving on November 23, 2023. He recalls the words of President Dwight Eisenhower, who, on Thanksgiving Day in 1956, proclaimed the significance of freedom and sharing abundance with those less fortunate. Eisenhower’s message resonates today as the nation faces its own challenges.
On a day steeped in historical significance, De Vinck also reflects on President Lyndon B. Johnson‘s words delivered just days after the tragic assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Johnson urged Americans to confront the unreasoning hate and division in the country, making a plea for unity and reverence.
As De Vinck contemplates his own life, he shares compelling numbers that illustrate his journey. At 74 years old, he notes that his heart has beaten approximately 2.8 billion times. He treasures his collection of over 1,000 books and the joy of contributing more than 100 essays to The Dallas Morning News.
In his Thanksgiving message, he poignantly states, “Blessed are the ancestors,” recognizing the sacrifices of those who came before him, including his immigrant parents who traveled 3,667 miles in 1948. Their journey allowed him to build a life filled with cherished moments, such as watching his children grow and holding his grandchildren shortly after their births.
De Vinck attributes much of his gratitude to historical figures like Johannes Gutenberg, whose invention of the movable-type printing press in 1440 paved the way for his access to education and literature. He expresses profound appreciation for the team at The Dallas Morning News, whose diverse backgrounds and talents continue to inspire him.
As families gather around tables this Thanksgiving, De Vinck’s message serves as a reminder to pause and reflect on the multitude of blessings that enrich our lives. He concludes with a powerful declaration: “My thanksgiving is perpetual.”
As the nation engages in celebrations filled with food and football, De Vinck encourages everyone to acknowledge their own blessings, fostering a spirit of gratitude that transcends the holiday. His reflections resonate as a powerful call to unity and appreciation in challenging times.
Stay tuned for more updates and reflections as we navigate this Thanksgiving season together.
