Urgent: Hijas del Campo Empowers Farmworkers in Brentwood
UPDATE: A groundbreaking initiative by Hijas del Campo is transforming the lives of farmworkers in Brentwood, California. The nonprofit, founded in early 2020, is on a mission to uplift migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families, providing essential support in health, education, and working conditions.
Just announced: The organization is currently raising $10,000 to distribute 500 food bags to 378 low-income farmworker families over the next two months. This urgent call to action aims to ensure that these families receive crucial food assistance, especially those who face barriers to traditional aid.
Mayra Jimenez Almaras, a 21-year-old finance student at Saint Mary’s College of California, is a testament to the nonprofit’s impact. She reflects on her journey from working in the fields at just 11 years old to preparing for graduation this December. “Hijas del Campo opened doors for me, providing resources and mentorship,” Jimenez Almaras stated.
The organization has supported nearly 2,000 individuals through outreach activities, ensuring that farmworkers receive essential items throughout the year. During summer, they distribute bags containing vital supplies such as intravenous fluids, masks, and sunscreen, while winter bags include hand warmers and clothing to combat the cold.
Hijas del Campo was co-founded by Marivel Mendoza and Dorina Moraida, who both have personal ties to farmwork. They witnessed the struggles of farmworkers during the COVID-19 pandemic and recognized the urgent need for assistance. “We’re committed to ensuring that all farmworkers, regardless of their background, have access to resources and support,” Mendoza emphasized.
In addition to immediate relief efforts, the nonprofit is tackling long-term challenges faced by farmworkers. They are currently constructing four tiny homes to provide transitional housing, along with comprehensive services such as financial literacy and healthcare access. “Having a secure place to live changes a person,” Moraida explained, highlighting the transformative power of stable housing.
As the organization celebrates its fifth anniversary, it continues to adapt to the community’s evolving needs. Through partnerships with local health services and educational institutions, they are enabling farmworkers to advocate for their rights and access vital resources.
Local leaders are urged to recognize the contributions of farmworkers, as Jimenez Almaras poignantly stated, “Look out for the people that feed you… treat everyone equally and be thankful.” Her plea underscores the importance of respecting those who provide the nation’s food.
This urgent initiative by Hijas del Campo is not just about immediate relief; it is about building a stronger, more equitable community for all. As the organization works tirelessly to meet its fundraising goal, your support can directly impact the lives of farmworker families in need.
