Death Toll Surges Past 120 as Cyclone Devastates Sri Lanka
UPDATE: The death toll from Cyclone Ditwah has tragically surpassed 120 as Sri Lanka grapples with unprecedented flooding and rescue demands. The cyclone continues to batter the island nation, leaving large areas submerged and communities in dire need of assistance.
Authorities report that dozens of passengers were forced to escape to the roofs of homes in the central region, approximately 100 miles north of Colombo, after floodwaters engulfed their bus overnight. In a concerning situation, nearly 100 students in the eastern part of the country are stranded in hostels, lacking both food and water as floodwaters close in.
In addition, ten families, including vulnerable children and the elderly, remain trapped on the second floor of a residential building. The sheer scale of the flooding has overwhelmed Sri Lanka’s emergency services, with distress calls pouring in from affected areas.
Death tolls have been reported in half of Sri Lanka’s 25 districts, and local officials have confirmed that 20 districts are moving people to shelters as rescue operations are hampered by devastated transport and telecommunications networks. The country, home to 23 million people, is facing a humanitarian crisis as it tries to recover from the devastating effects of Cyclone Ditwah.
The country’s Disaster Management Center reported early Saturday that 130 people are currently missing, alongside the confirmed 123 fatalities. With local officials fearing that the final death toll could be much higher, the situation remains critical. In one district, Badulla, nearly 50 deaths have been reported, with 41 individuals still unaccounted for, according to the district’s top administrative officer.
This catastrophic event compounds the struggles of a nation still healing from the scars of a decades-long civil war and the repercussions of a recent economic crisis. The urgent need for rescue and relief efforts is paramount, as communities across the nation await help.
As the situation develops, authorities urge citizens to stay informed and safe. Updates will follow as rescue operations progress and officials assess the full extent of the disaster.
For those seeking ways to assist, local organizations are mobilizing to provide aid to the affected regions. Immediate action is crucial as Sri Lanka confronts this daunting challenge.
