Urgent Winter Weather Advisory: Up to 5 Inches of Snow Expected
UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has just been issued for Southern Erie, effective from 6 p.m. today until Monday at 7 a.m., warning residents of potentially dangerous conditions. The National Weather Service forecasts total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches, with winds gusting up to 35 mph, posing serious risks for commuters.
The heaviest snowfall is expected to hit late this evening, with rates reaching up to 1 inch per hour. This could lead to hazardous driving conditions, particularly during the morning commute. Motorists are urged to exercise caution, slow down, and adjust their speeds according to the weather.
“Plan on slippery road conditions,” advises the National Weather Service. “The hazardous conditions could significantly impact travel in the region.”
Each year, winter weather contributes to over 6,000 fatalities and 480,000 injuries from weather-related vehicle accidents. In light of this, drivers are reminded to prioritize safety when navigating snow-covered roads. If you must travel, opt for routes with fewer trees and power lines to avoid potential hazards from falling branches or downed power lines.
Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission emphasize the importance of preparing your vehicle for winter conditions. Ensure your gas tank is full and pack essential supplies, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, flashlight, cell phone, blanket, extra warm clothing, drinking water, and high-calorie non-perishable food.
If you find yourself stranded, remain calm and avoid walking to safety. Notify someone of your situation and use a cloth attached to your vehicle to signal for help. Activate your dome light and flashers to increase visibility.
Be aware of snow plows operating in the area. Give them ample room and only overtake when you have a clear view of the road ahead. Before heading out, check current road conditions to make informed decisions.
Stay safe during this winter storm by following these critical driving tips. With hazardous weather approaching, sharing this information could save lives. Stay tuned for updates as conditions evolve.
