Netflix Removes Three Holiday Classics Just Before Christmas
Netflix has announced that it will be removing three popular Christmas movies from its platform just as the holiday season begins, leading to disappointment among subscribers. As of midnight on December 1, 2023, viewers will no longer have access to the critically acclaimed film Tangerine, along with Christmas with the Kranks and The Night Before.
The departure of these films comes after Netflix has expanded its holiday offerings, adding titles such as Merry Liddle Christmas and Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas throughout November. However, the loss of these three films marks a significant change for fans seeking festive entertainment.
Tangerine: A Unique Holiday Film
Among the films being removed, Tangerine stands out as a modern classic that redefines the holiday genre. Directed by Sean Baker, this 2015 comedy-drama was filmed entirely on iPhones and is set on Christmas Eve in Los Angeles. While it may not fit the traditional mold of a Christmas movie, it explores themes of friendship, love, and connection against the backdrop of the holiday.
Despite its unconventional premise—following two transgender sex workers on a quest through the city—Tangerine has garnered high praise. With a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it ranks among the best Christmas movies, even surpassing classics like It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street.
In fact, Tangerine is often cited as a top choice for those looking to experience a different kind of holiday narrative. Its emotional depth and modern storytelling resonate with audiences, making its removal from Netflix particularly impactful.
Where to Watch After Departure
While Netflix subscribers will lose access to these titles, they will not be entirely unavailable. On December 1, Christmas with the Kranks will move to HBO Max, and The Night Before will be available on both Peacock and Tubi. Tangerine will remain accessible on several platforms, including Hulu and Disney+.
As the holiday season approaches, viewers are encouraged to explore these alternative streaming options for their festive viewing needs. With the removal of these films, Netflix continues to shape its content lineup, responding to changing viewer preferences while also facing criticism for removing beloved titles.
