Winter Weather Advisory Issued for South Central PA – Up to 3 Inches Expected
URGENT UPDATE: A winter weather advisory is now active for South Central Pennsylvania, with the National Weather Service forecasting up to 3 inches of snow tomorrow, January 23, 2024, from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents in Fulton, Franklin, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties need to prepare for potentially hazardous road conditions.
Heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with total snow accumulations ranging from 1 to 3 inches and possible ice accumulations creating a light glaze. The weather service warns that roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, will become slick and treacherous, impacting the Tuesday morning commute significantly.
“Drivers should plan for slippery road conditions and slow down,” officials emphasize. With winter weather contributing to over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities annually, safety is paramount. Authorities recommend avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary. If you must drive, utilize routes with fewer trees and power lines to minimize risks associated with falling branches.
The advisory highlights that icy conditions can exist even in near-freezing temperatures. As temperatures drop, it is vital to adjust driving habits accordingly. Prepare your vehicle with essential winter supplies, including a windshield scraper, jumper cables, and non-perishable food.
If you find yourself stranded during the storm, remain calm and make your vehicle visible to rescuers. Attach a cloth to your antenna, and use your dome light and flashers. Avoid walking to safety, as this could expose you to greater danger.
Stay informed about road conditions by calling 5-1-1 for the latest updates. Planning your travel in advance and communicating your plans with family or friends can make a crucial difference in ensuring safety during this winter weather event.
As the forecast develops, stay tuned for more updates and ensure your readiness for the conditions ahead. Share this information to help others stay safe during the impending winter storm.
