‘Zootopia 2’ Dominates Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office
The animated sequel, Zootopia 2, has emerged as a remarkable success following its release just before the Thanksgiving weekend. In a stunning five-day period, the film has generated over $556 million globally, according to the Hollywood Reporter. This impressive debut has established it as the biggest-ever worldwide opening for an animated film and the fourth-largest start for any Hollywood production.
A significant portion of the film’s earnings came from international markets, particularly $400 million from overseas. Notably, China played a crucial role in this success, contributing $272 million to the total. This figure marks the largest opening for an animated film in the territory and represents China’s second-biggest launch since the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
The marketing campaign for Zootopia 2 has been extensive, featuring the beloved characters Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, alongside a new character voiced by Ke Huy Quan, named Gary, who is the first reptile in the town of Zootopia. The film has also received positive reviews from both critics and audiences, with many suggesting it is on par with the original 2016 film, which grossed $1.025 billion and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2017.
As Zootopia 2 continues its impressive run, it is already more than halfway to matching its predecessor’s box office performance. The film’s journey through the awards season will be closely watched, as it aims to replicate the acclaim of the original.
In addition to Zootopia 2, another major holiday release, Wicked: For Good, has also performed well. It has amassed $393.3 million globally, crossing the $200 million mark domestically during its second weekend. The film added $29.4 million to its overseas earnings, indicating a strong trajectory similar to that of the first Wicked film.
Looking ahead, the holiday season will see further competition in theaters with the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and 100 Nights of Hero on December 5, followed by Dust Bunny and Silent Night, Deadly Night on December 12. The much-anticipated Avatar: Fire & Ash is set to debut on December 19, promising to add to the excitement of this festive box office period.
