Kino Lorber Acquires North American Rights to ‘The Currents’

Kino Lorber has secured the North American distribution rights for The Currents, a psychological drama directed by Argentine filmmaker Milagros Mumenthale. This acquisition follows the film’s world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023, where it was featured in the Platform section, showcasing innovative storytelling.

The film centers on Lina, portrayed by Isabel Aimé González Sola, an accomplished Argentine artist and designer who faces a traumatic near-drowning incident while receiving an award for her fashion achievements in Switzerland. This life-altering experience triggers a profound psychological crisis, leading Lina to develop a severe aversion to water and a descent into emotional numbness that disrupts her life.

Critics have responded positively to The Currents. In a review for The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Frosch praised the film as “an uncommon mix of stylistic rigor and feeling,” highlighting its appeal to audiences and industry professionals alike. He emphasized the film’s generosity in its storytelling, avoiding sensationalism while engaging deeply with themes of fear, shame, and trauma.

Kino Lorber plans to release The Currents theatrically in 2026, followed by a multiplatform launch.
