New York Launches First State-Sponsored Holocaust Memorial
UPDATE: New York Governor Kathy Hochul has just signed a groundbreaking bill to establish the state’s first-ever sponsored Holocaust memorial. The announcement was made on Monday, marking a significant step in honoring the victims and survivors of this tragic chapter in history.
The memorial will be located at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, designed to serve as a vital educational resource and a place for remembrance. “With the first ever state-sponsored Holocaust Memorial, we are honoring the victims and survivors of the Holocaust while ensuring that all visitors have a place to remember and reflect on what the Jewish community has endured,” said Hochul in a statement.
This initiative stems from a collaboration led by state Senator Patricia Fahy and Assemblymember Gabriella Romero, with support from the Capital District Jewish Holocaust Memorial. The memorial aims to provide a comprehensive history of the Holocaust along with survivor testimonies, contributing to a deeper understanding of the events and the enduring impact of antisemitism.
The Office of General Services will oversee the design, programming, and site selection for the memorial, which will join other significant sites of remembrance on the plaza. This action comes at a critical time, as reports of antisemitism continue to rise across the nation.
New York’s commitment to combatting hate is clear. “We reaffirm our commitment to rooting out antisemitism and ensuring a peaceful and thriving future for all,” Hochul remarked, emphasizing the urgent need for collective remembrance and education.
As this project moves forward, it promises to serve as a powerful reminder of the past and a beacon for future generations. The timeline for completion and further details on the memorial’s design will be revealed in upcoming announcements.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story, as New York takes a significant step towards honoring the legacy of Holocaust victims and promoting a culture of remembrance and respect.
