Nominations Open NOW for 2026 Leader of the Year Award in Aurora

URGENT UPDATE: Nominations are now being accepted for the prestigious 2026 Scheketa Hart-Burns Leader of the Year Award in Aurora, with a deadline of Friday, Dec. 5, 2025. The African American Heritage Advisory Board is calling on the community to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Aurora’s Black community.

This award, named in honor of the late Ald. Scheketa Hart-Burns, who was the first Black member of the Aurora City Council and served for 31 years, celebrates those who exemplify Black excellence and are dedicated to improving the lives of residents. Hart-Burns, a trailblazer for civic leadership and community empowerment, would have celebrated her 71st birthday on Monday, Dec. 1.

Nominations can be submitted online at www.tinyurl.com/2026Leader. The recipient will be formally recognized at the 20th annual African American Heritage Dinner on Feb. 27, 2026, marking a milestone for this esteemed award.
