Google Engineer Shares Urgent Tips for Transitioning to AI Roles
UPDATE: In a groundbreaking revelation, Maitri Mangal, a 26-year-old software engineer at Google, has shared her journey of transitioning to an AI role, emphasizing the urgency of adapting to the tech industry’s rapid evolution. In a world where AI is reshaping job landscapes, her insights are invaluable for those looking to pivot into this booming sector.
Mangal, based in New York, dedicated an entire year to upskilling in AI, spending about two hours daily learning fundamental concepts and creating engaging content. “The tech industry changed dramatically in 2023, and I felt compelled to pursue AI,” she stated. Her experience highlights the immediate importance of developing personal brands in tech to gain recognition in this competitive field.
After three years at Google and multiple role changes, Mangal recently joined the Workspace AI team. She distinguishes between the roles of an AI machine learning (ML) engineer and an AI software engineer, noting that the latter integrates AI capabilities into applications—a critical area of growth.
Mangal’s journey began in early 2024 when she started sharing tech content on Instagram and LinkedIn. “Creating content motivated me to keep learning and made me confident in sharing my knowledge,” she explained. This approach not only solidified her understanding but also garnered feedback that deepened her insights.
By January, just seven months into her upskilling journey, Mangal began applying for AI positions at Google. In March, she successfully transitioned into her new role. “If I’m investing so much time in learning, I need to make the most of it,” she said.
Mangal’s commitment to continuous learning is evident. “I still dedicate about an hour each day to upskilling,” she noted. She recommends starting with fundamental courses, such as Google’s Introduction to Generative AI and Google Prompting Essentials, available on platforms like Coursera. “Talking about these concepts helps me understand them better.”
While Mangal acknowledges that creating content is not for everyone, she strongly advises aspiring AI professionals to engage in practical projects. “Courses are essential, but staying updated with the latest AI news and working on mini projects is crucial,” she urged.
For those applying internally, Mangal suggests highlighting side projects on resumes, as they can significantly enhance candidacy without undergoing extensive interview processes.
Mangal’s story is a powerful reminder of the evolving tech landscape and the urgent need for professionals to adapt. As AI continues to surge, her proactive approach serves as a case study for anyone looking to pivot into this exciting field.
For anyone eager to follow in her footsteps, Mangal’s journey underscores the importance of upskilling, networking, and creating content to stand out in the competitive world of AI.
