Amy Duggar Reflects on Surface-Level Relationships with Cousins
Amy Duggar recently shared insights into her childhood relationships with her cousins, describing them as largely superficial. During her appearance on the “Unplanned” podcast hosted by Matt and Abby Howard on December 10, 2023, Duggar reflected on the family dynamics influenced by the teachings of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), which many of her cousins adhered to.
Despite spending significant time together, including trips and family gatherings, Amy noted that their interactions lacked depth. “We never really talked about the things we were struggling with or what God was doing in our life,” she explained. The conversations often revolved around mundane topics, such as the weather or compliments on clothing. This, she suggested, may have stemmed from the IBLP philosophy, which emphasizes maintaining emotional distance from those outside the prescribed circle.
Dillon King, Amy’s husband, added context to her observations, stating, “They teach, like, if you’re not in that circle, they keep you at arm’s reach.” This dynamic has shaped the way Amy perceives familial relationships, particularly within the Duggar family.
Modesty Standards and Family Gatherings
Amy also recounted experiences related to modesty standards during visits to her cousins’ homes. Although she often wore jeans, she was occasionally asked to wear skirts to comply with their family’s rules. “I’ve tried on pantaloons before. I’ve tried on one of their swimsuits,” she shared, indicating her efforts to respect their values despite her personal preferences.
Dillon’s first encounter with Amy’s cousins highlighted the cultural differences stemming from IBLP teachings. At a bowling event, he began dancing to music, unaware that her family did not engage in such behavior. Amy recalled the awkwardness of the moment, as her cousins exchanged glances and slowly turned away, reflecting their disapproval.
A Shift in Relationships
Over the years, Amy has formed a closer bond with her cousin, Jill Duggar. They both appeared in season one of the Prime Video docuseries, “Shiny Happy People,” which explores the controversies surrounding the Duggar family. Amy described the joy of their relationship, saying, “Cousinship is so much fun. Like, we can joke around and laugh and we have inside jokes.”
Their connection has provided a sense of safety and mutual understanding, which Amy found lacking in her earlier relationships with other cousins. “It’s such a different way of living compared to really what we had growing up,” she remarked, emphasizing the importance of emotional connection in familial relationships.
Amy has also recognized the need to establish boundaries with her family due to past issues. She expressed a desire for clarity, stating, “I don’t want to ride a fence,” acknowledging the complexities of her relationships within the Duggar family.
In a previous interview with Us Weekly, Amy revealed that her last conversation with her uncle Jim Bob occurred just before his son, Josh Duggar, faced legal troubles related to child pornography charges. Josh was ultimately sentenced to more than 12 years in prison, a situation that has further complicated family dynamics.
Amy Duggar’s reflections shed light on her evolving perspective on family relationships, revealing both the challenges and the growth that can arise from understanding one’s background and values.
