TJ Maxx is set to permanently close its location inside Ellsworth Place Mall in Silver Spring, Maryland, on January 3, 2024. The store is currently offering a 20% off liquidation sale on most items as it prepares to shut down operations. According to a store representative, certain exclusions may apply to the discounts, and inventory is limited as the closure approaches.

The 24,000 square-foot store opened in November 2015, providing approximately 60 jobs in the area. As the store prepares to close, there has been no announcement regarding a replacement tenant, nor has the company disclosed the reasons behind the decision to close this location.

Impact on Employees and Future Prospects

Details regarding the status of employees affected by the closure remain unclear. Efforts to obtain comments from TJ Maxx have not received a response as of publication.

Despite this closure, the future seems bright for TJ Maxx and its parent company, The TJX Companies. The company plans to open new stores, with a goal of launching 2,110 new locations in 2026 across its brands, which also include Marshalls and Burlington. This represents a significant commitment to expansion, especially considering the previous projection of around 1,300 stores for 2024.

Recently, construction on at least six TJX stores has begun in states including Kansas, Ohio, Mississippi, New York, and Washington. While it has not been officially confirmed that these new stores will be part of the planned 2,000 additional locations, the company’s substantial growth strategy indicates a robust outlook for the retail sector.

As the TJX brand continues to expand, it remains to be seen how the closure of the Silver Spring location will impact the overall business landscape in the area. Local shoppers will soon be looking for alternatives as the store prepares to close its doors for the last time next week.
