Rio Zoo Treats Animals to Popsicles Amid Scorching Heatwave
Animals at Rio de Janeiro’s BioParque Zoo enjoyed frozen treats on January 10, 2024, as the city grappled with severe heat. With temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), zoo officials prepared a variety of popsicles tailored to meet the dietary needs of different species. This initiative aimed to provide relief from the oppressive heat during Brazil’s summer months.
Zoo staff distributed popsicles made from frozen fruit and mixtures containing frozen blood to various animals, including jaguars and monkeys. One notable scene involved a jaguar attempting to retrieve ground chicken popsicles from a floating tray in its water tank. According to Letizia Feitoza, a biologist at the zoo, this behavior aids in the animal’s hydration. “When she tries to fish out the frozen food, she ends up ingesting water as well,” Feitoza explained.
Providing Comfort to Zoo Residents
The distribution of frozen foods is a routine aspect of animal care at the zoo, particularly during extreme weather. Similar measures were implemented last summer, when high temperatures impacted much of Brazil’s southeast. Zoo officials emphasize that these frozen treats not only offer nutritional benefits but also help maintain thermal comfort for the animals during sweltering conditions.
Despite the heat, visitors flocked to the BioParque Zoo to witness the animals interacting with their icy snacks. Many expressed delight at seeing the creatures enjoying their popsicles. “I thought it was really cool,” said Lorena Carvalho, a teacher visiting the zoo. “I think it brings them more comfort.”
Health Risks and City Response
The intense heat prompted city authorities to issue a Level 3 heat alert, advising residents to take precautions against the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures. As Rio de Janeiro continues to experience these extreme conditions, initiatives like the frozen treats for zoo animals highlight the ongoing efforts to ensure both animal welfare and public awareness about heat-related health issues.
As the summer progresses, it remains crucial for both residents and local institutions to adapt to the challenging climate, ensuring safety and comfort for all.
