The Perkiomen Valley Schools Superintendent, Barbara Russell, has announced that the current academic year will be her final one in the district. During a school board meeting on January 12, 2024, the board unanimously accepted her retirement letter, marking the end of a significant tenure that began in 1985.

Longstanding Career in Education

In her letter, Russell reflected on her extensive career, which commenced as a high school science teacher. Over the decades, she has held various positions within the district, including principal and assistant superintendent. “I have been fortunate to serve the district in a variety of roles and to work alongside dedicated students, educators, administrators, board members, and community partners,” she noted.

Board Vice President Todd McKinney humorously questioned her decision during the meeting, asking, “Are you sure?” to which Russell confidently responded, “I’m sure.” Board President Laura White lightheartedly suggested that if the board abstained from voting, she could remain in her position indefinitely.

Board member Wayde Weston expressed gratitude for Russell’s years of service, emphasizing the positive impact she has had on the community. Russell’s contributions have been acknowledged widely, with her educational background including a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from DeSales University, a master’s degree in biology from West Chester University, and a doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania.

Leadership Journey and Future Aspirations

Russell became the superintendent in 2017 after serving as assistant superintendent under Clifford Rogers. In a previous interview, she described Rogers as a great mentor who prepared her well for her leadership role. Her administrative experience includes positions such as assistant principal at Perkiomen Middle School West and principal at Skippack Elementary School.

In her retirement letter, Russell expressed her appreciation for the support received from the board, saying, “I wish the students, staff, community, and this Board, continued success and all the very best in the years ahead.” The board has not yet announced a timeline or process for selecting her successor.

As she prepares to leave, Russell’s legacy reflects a commitment to educational excellence and community engagement, impacting numerous lives within the Perkiomen Valley School District.
