Daniel Day-Lewis Returns to Acting in Family Drama ‘Anemone’
Daniel Day-Lewis made a highly anticipated return to the public eye during the 69th edition of the BFI London Film Festival on October 4, 2023. The acclaimed actor, who stepped away from the screen after his role in Phantom Thread in 2017, received a warm welcome from fans, signing autographs and basking in a rousing ovation. He was present to discuss his latest film, Anemone, directed by his son, Ronan Day-Lewis.
In Anemone, which marks Ronan’s directorial debut, Day-Lewis plays a middle-aged man who embarks on a journey into the woods to reconnect with his estranged brother, portrayed by Sean Bean. The film explores themes of brotherhood and reconciliation, with Day-Lewis stating that his motivation to participate stemmed from a “pure wish” to collaborate with his son. He expressed a sense of “sadness” regarding the potential missed opportunity to work together in film.
Day-Lewis emphasized that the film’s exploration of “the lack of need for words” resonated with him. Understanding his character’s background, particularly his military experience, was crucial to portraying the complex dynamics between the brothers. The film also stars Samantha Morton and had its world premiere at the New York Film Festival.
On Method Acting and Immersion
During the discussion, Day-Lewis reflected on his acting process, particularly his use of method acting. He noted that while immersion in his roles makes sense to him, many actors achieve great performances without it. “I still find that process a joyful thing. We’re playing games for a living,” he remarked.
He addressed recent criticisms of method acting, describing some of the commentary as misinformed. “It’s almost like some special science that we’re involved in, or a cult,” he explained. “It’s just a way of freeing yourself to respond in any way that you’re moved to in that moment.”
Day-Lewis recalled his early experiences in acting, humorously admitting, “I was clueless” when he first approached roles like that in My Left Foot. He noted the elitist perceptions surrounding theater and film during his acting school days, finding it frustrating that theater was considered superior while film was often dismissed.
Reflections on Career and Family
The actor shared anecdotes from his career, including his long-standing collaboration with director Jim Sheridan. He expressed admiration for actors like Marlon Brando and shared humorous insights about his childhood crush on Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins.
As the discussion progressed, Ronan Day-Lewis joined his father on stage, describing the filming of Anemone as “claustrophobic” yet “incredibly intimate.” He highlighted the familial collaboration between them while writing the script, explaining that working with a family member can ease the pressure of creative differences.
Daniel Day-Lewis also shared his regret over announcing his retirement in 2017, stating, “Looking back on it now — I would have done well to just keep my mouth shut.” He clarified that he never intended to retire; rather, he wanted to explore different types of work.
Concluding the event, Day-Lewis offered advice to aspiring actors, emphasizing the importance of staying true to oneself amid industry pressures. “It takes a certain steadiness in yourself to say, ‘No, I need to just do this the only way I know how,’” he advised, leaving the audience with a heartfelt final standing ovation.
