UPDATE: The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has confirmed that all northern sites will be fully stocked with rainbow trout just in time for the highly anticipated trout opener on Saturday, October 18, 2023. After a delay caused by unseasonably warm temperatures this fall, which have been increasingly common due to climate change, anglers can now prepare for a fantastic fishing experience.

Recent weather has finally aligned with typical fall conditions, allowing the IDNR to move forward with stocking operations across these popular northern sites. Notable locations include:

– **Cook County:** Axehead, Belleau, Busse Woods North, Green, Horsetail, Sag Quarry East, and Wolf Lake at William W. Powers State Recreation Area.
– **DuPage County:** Grove, Pickerel, and Silver.
– **Kankakee County:** Bird Park Quarry and Rock Creek at Kankakee River State Park.
– **Kendall County:** Big Lake at Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area.
– **Lake County:** Sand Lake at Illinois Beach State Park.
– **McHenry County:** Spring Grove Hatchery Pond and Lake Atwood.
– **Will County:** Lake Strini and Van Horn Woods.

Fishing enthusiasts are reminded that a fishing license and an inland trout stamp are required to participate. The daily bag limit is set at five fish, making this a perfect opportunity for families and friends to enjoy a day out in nature.

As part of the IDNR’s announcement, they also noted that 14 downstate waters will not be stocked before the opener. This information is crucial for those planning to fish in multiple locations.

With the trout opener just days away, anglers are urged to prepare their gear and make plans to visit one of the stocked sites. The excitement is palpable as the community gears up for this beloved annual event, which not only supports recreational fishing but also fosters connections among anglers and nature lovers alike.

Stay tuned for more updates as the opener approaches, and don’t miss your chance to take part in this thrilling outdoor experience. Share this news to spread the word and gather your fishing buddies for what promises to be an unforgettable trout season!
