Survey Reveals Hair Loss is Americans’ Top Aging Concern
A recent survey conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Doctor’s Best has revealed that hair loss is the most significant concern for many Americans regarding aging. Out of 2,000 adults surveyed, 40% identified hair loss as the physical change they fear the most, closely followed by wrinkles at 39%. This apprehension is notably pronounced among younger generations, with nearly half of Gen Z respondents (47%) citing hair loss as their primary aging fear.
The emotional implications of hair loss are significant. The survey highlighted that 42% of those who have noticed signs of aging reported a marked decline in self-esteem due to hair loss. The impact extends beyond personal appearance, affecting social interactions and relationships. 51% of participants indicated that hair loss has adversely influenced their dating lives, while 35% noted a decrease in confidence during social engagements, and 27% felt it affected their professional lives.
The survey findings also challenge the perception that hair loss is predominantly a male issue. Women experience a profound emotional response to hair loss, with 51% of those affected admitting to hiding their thinning hair out of embarrassment. The data indicates that hair plays a crucial role in personal identity, with 67% of adults viewing their hair as essential to their self-image. This figure rises among younger individuals, with nearly 80% of Gen Z and Millennials recognizing hair as a core aspect of their identity.
Katie Lucas, Chief Marketing Officer for Doctor’s Best, emphasized the broader consequences of hair loss, stating, “Hair loss is more than just a cosmetic concern; it affects confidence, relationships, and sense of self.” She noted that nearly half of adults face emotional challenges as their hair thins, particularly women, who often feel pressured to conceal these changes.
The survey also explored societal perceptions of hair loss. For men, a shaved head is generally preferred over visible balding, with 62% of respondents favoring this option. Interestingly, 82% of those surveyed considered baldness in men either appealing or neutral. In contrast, perceptions of baldness in women were less favorable, with 49% of respondents describing it as somewhat or very unappealing.
Despite these challenges, there is a willingness to seek treatments for hair loss. The survey found that 68% of individuals experiencing hair loss are either currently using or considering using supplements to address the issue. Medication and over-the-counter treatments were among the most sought-after options for those looking to promote hair regrowth.
Gale Bensussen, CEO of Doctor’s Best, stated, “The study demonstrates that consumers want non-invasive options that not only promote hair growth but also reinforce their confidence.” The company aims to provide science-based solutions that support individuals in embracing the aging process while enhancing their health and self-identity.
The survey, conducted between August 25 and August 29, 2025, utilized a robust methodology to ensure reliable findings. Respondents were evenly split between genders and completed the survey online. The study’s design included dynamic sampling techniques to achieve the desired demographic representation. However, it is important to note that the results may not be representative of individuals without internet access.
As discussions about aging and appearance continue, this survey sheds light on the complex emotional landscape surrounding hair loss, highlighting the need for understanding and support in addressing these concerns.
