URGENT UPDATE: A Rutgers University fraternity has been suspended following a shocking incident that left a 19-year-old student in critical condition. The Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity chapter, located on the New Brunswick, New Jersey campus, is under investigation after the student was hospitalized early Wednesday morning.

Authorities confirm that Rutgers police responded to a call at a residence on College Avenue at 12:26 a.m. on Wednesday, where they found the student unresponsive. He was promptly taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is currently investigating the details of the incident.

In response to this alarming event, Rutgers University has issued a cease and desist order on all fraternity activities, placing Alpha Sigma Phi on organizational disciplinary probation until May 18 and social probation until November 3. A notice has been posted declaring the fraternity house an unsafe structure.

Gordy Heminger, spokesperson for Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Inc., stated, “We are currently gathering information… if it is determined that the undergraduate members hazed that evening, the chapter will be closed, and any member who participated will be permanently expelled.” He emphasized that hazing is strictly not tolerated within the fraternity’s culture.

The incident comes during a busy weekend at Rutgers as students celebrate homecoming and Family Weekend. Reactions among students reveal shock and concern. Freshman Adriana Lesniak expressed disbelief, stating, “The whole scenario is insane because people pay a lot of money to join frats… you really have to think about, like, is it worth the money.”

As the investigation unfolds, Rutgers University has referred all media inquiries to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. This developing situation has raised urgent questions about fraternity culture and the safety of students on campus.
