Canucks Launch Diwali-Inspired Jersey in Time for Festivities
The Vancouver Canucks have unveiled a new Diwali-themed jersey, allowing fans to celebrate the festival of lights while showcasing team pride. Designed by Surrey-based artist Suki Kaur, the jersey features distinct elements such as a flame, a peacock, the night sky, and intricate phulkari patterns. This marks the fifth consecutive year the team has released special merchandise for Diwali.
Kaur expressed her intent for the design to resonate beyond the Punjabi community. She emphasized, “The phulkari is special to me, because it’s such an integral part of Punjabi fashion, but I didn’t want it to speak just to Punjabis, because Diwali is not just about Punjabi people. You see variations in every culture.” This sentiment reflects the diverse celebrations of Diwali, which is recognized by multiple communities across the globe.
Fans have shown enthusiasm for the new jersey, with many expressing excitement about wearing it to upcoming games. Arjan Attwal, a dedicated Canucks supporter, stated, “I’m going to the Diwali game, so it’s gonna be cool to see it in person.” The Canucks are set to host Diwali night on November 1, 2023, in Abbotsford and again on November 5, 2023, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.
While the jersey is positioned as a premium item with a price tag of $750, more affordable options featuring the same logo are available, including hats, hoodies, and pucks. Some fans have raised concerns about the jersey’s cost. Austin Taylor commented, “It’s a nice design, I mean, for the price it’s terrible. $750 for a jersey is kind of crippling. A jersey of that price better come with front row seats and a dinner if you’re gonna pay that much.”
The introduction of this Diwali-themed merchandise highlights the Canucks’ ongoing commitment to engaging with their diverse fan base. The team’s efforts to incorporate cultural celebrations into their branding not only celebrate the spirit of community but also broaden the appeal of their merchandise. As the festive season approaches, fans eagerly anticipate wearing their new jerseys and participating in the celebrations surrounding Diwali nights at the games.
