Gavin Ellison Aims to Conclude Family Legacy in Final Game
Naperville Central senior Gavin Ellison is set to play his last game on Friday night against Naperville North, marking the end of a remarkable family football legacy. This highly anticipated crosstown match will take place at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, a venue that has witnessed significant moments for the Ellison brothers. Gavin, who plays safety and handles kicking duties, is the final sibling to represent the Redhawks, following in the footsteps of his brothers, Aidan and Logan Ellison, both of whom were integral players for the team.
“This is obviously a rivalry game, and we know anything can happen,” Gavin said. “It’s our last game ever, so we might as well give it everything we have. We just can’t quit.” His determination is evident, especially after a challenging season that saw the Redhawks struggling with a record of 2-6, including a recent loss to Homewood-Flossmoor. Despite the setbacks, Gavin has emerged as a leader for the team, embodying the resilience that his family is known for.
Head Coach Mike Ulreich commended Gavin’s contributions, noting, “He’s playing with a serious injury to his hip, so he’s fighting through it. Just like his two brothers, he’s brought consistency to our team.” The Ellison brothers have left a lasting impact on Naperville Central football, with Gavin keen to add to that legacy during this significant game against the playoff-eligible Huskies, who hold a record of 5-3.
The emotional weight of this final game is not lost on Gavin. “We tried to create a legacy here, and we did,” he reflected. “Everything good comes to an end, though. We just want to finish strong.” His brothers have played pivotal roles in previous matches against Naperville North at this very stadium, where both Logan and Gavin have successfully executed game-winning field goals.
Gavin’s older brother, Aidan, currently plays for North Central College, where he is a graduate student after spending four years at Arkansas State. “It’s awesome being able to see him succeed and have fun with it,” Aidan shared. He has attended every game this season, supporting Gavin as he pursues his own football goals. “I know he puts in a lot of work off the field and wants the best for his teammates,” Aidan added.
The camaraderie among teammates is palpable, with senior defensive end Paul Peradotti acknowledging Gavin’s legacy. “I can’t say I’ve known any other kicker but an Ellison,” he remarked. “I think he just wants to one-up his brothers. That’s what drives him to be the best he can be.” Gavin’s desire to excel is evident, and he carries the weight of his family’s accomplishments into this final game.
As for the potential of a dramatic finish, Coach Ulreich expressed optimism. “I’d love it if it came down to that,” he said. Gavin, too, is prepared for the moment. “If it comes to that, so be it,” he stated confidently. “I have confidence in myself, my snapper, and my holder. I think it’s going to be really special.”
Gavin Ellison’s final game is more than just a match; it is a tribute to family, legacy, and the spirit of competition. As the Redhawks take the field, they aim to honor their commitment and dedication by helping Gavin conclude his high school football career on a high note.
