John B. Gordon 383 UDC Secures 35 Awards at GA Division Convention

The John B. Gordon 383 chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) achieved remarkable success at the 130th GA Division Convention, held in Marietta. The chapter proudly received a total of 35 awards for its commitment to the UDC’s core objectives, which include historical preservation, education, and community service. This recognition highlights the chapter’s dedication over the past year.

A Year of Dedication and Achievement

Chapter President Sheila Tucker expressed pride in the accomplishments of her members. “All of the awards our chapter received are related to the UDC objectives one way or another,” Tucker stated. “It took the members working together and thinking of others to make our year be so successful.” The awards showcase the chapter’s collaborative spirit and its focus on meaningful contributions to society.

The awards ceremony recognized various achievements across multiple categories, with the chapter earning first place in several key areas. These included:

  • First Place, Jane Grier Durden Award for Bestowing the Most National Defense Medals
  • First Place, Blount Memorial Cup for Purchasing the Most Crosses of Military Service Medals
  • First Place, Recorder of Military Service Award for Chapter Awarded Most Vietnam War Crosses
  • First Place (Tie), Recorder of Military Service Award for Chapter Awarded Most Global War on Terror Crosses
  • First Place, Recorder of Military Service Award for Most Outstanding Report
  • First Place, Jo Anne Rye Award for Best Memorial Day Program with Membership of 35 or Less
  • First Place, McLeod Bowl for Best Memorial Day Program

In addition to these accolades, the chapter received numerous special awards, including the Chairman’s Award for the Best Homeland Defense Service Award Chapter Report and the Special Chairman’s Award for the First Memorial Report Received.

Community Engagement and Future Initiatives

The convention also featured a Presidents’ Banquet, where leaders from various chapters shared their accomplishments over the past year. Each President had two minutes to highlight positive projects and community engagement initiatives. The John B. Gordon 383 chapter emphasized its ongoing support for veterans, first responders, and personnel involved in homeland security.

Tucker highlighted the chapter’s commitment to education, stating, “Our chapter proudly gives non-fictional children’s American History books and books about Georgia to local schools and public libraries.” The group also celebrates Georgia Day each year on February 12, reinforcing their dedication to local history and culture.

As the 2025-2026 term begins, the John B. Gordon 383 UDC chapter is already planning new projects to continue its support for veterans and the community. Their achievements at the GA Division Convention serve as a solid foundation for future initiatives, ensuring their legacy of service and dedication remains strong.
