Patriots Claim LB Caleb Murphy from Chargers Ahead of Week 8
UPDATE: The New England Patriots have just claimed linebacker Caleb Murphy off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers, adding crucial depth to their defense as they prepare for Week 8 of the NFL season. This move comes hot on the heels of the Patriots’ impressive 31-13 victory over the Tennessee Titans last week.
Murphy was waived by the Chargers on October 26, 2023, just four days before being picked up by the Patriots, according to the NFL transaction wire. Standing at 6’3” and weighing 254 pounds, the four-year veteran aims to strengthen a defensive front that has shown potential this season.
Despite a slow start in his professional career, Murphy’s collegiate achievements are notable. In 2022, he set the NCAA single-season record with 25.5 sacks while playing for Ferris State, earning accolades such as the Ted Hendrick Award for the nation’s best defensive end. His impressive stats include 39 tackles for loss, showcasing his ability to disrupt plays effectively.
Murphy’s journey began when he signed with the Titans as an undrafted rookie free agent in April 2023, where he played under current Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. He was later signed to the Chargers’ practice squad and elevated to their 53-man roster, participating in three games this season before his release.
As he joins the Patriots, Murphy fills the team’s final open active roster spot, joining a linebacker crew that includes notable players like Harold Landry III and Robert Spillane. His addition raises questions about the future of veteran linebacker Jahlani Tavai, who has missed the last two weeks due to an ankle injury and has been the subject of trade rumors.
With the NFL season intensifying, the Patriots are making strategic moves to ensure they remain competitive. Murphy’s skill set could significantly impact their defensive strategy as they gear up for their next matchup.
Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Murphy integrates into the Patriots’ system and whether he can translate his collegiate success to the NFL stage. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops.
