Scott Adkins, the administrator of Penobscot County, has announced his resignation after securing a new position, officials confirmed on Tuesday. His resignation will take effect on November 7, 2023, marking the end of his tenure that began on September 12, 2022.

Prior to his current role, Adkins served as the county’s finance director for nine years, followed by a year as the town manager of Milford. He briefly held the position of county administrator for Hancock County in 2016 before returning to Penobscot County in 2022.

The Penobscot County Commissioners expressed their gratitude for Adkins’ contributions, stating, “His commitment to Penobscot County has been invaluable, and we especially want to recognize the profound benefit his prior experience brought to the role.”

As the county administrator, Adkins oversaw various functions including the county jail, sheriff’s office, registry of deeds, and probate court. Additionally, he was responsible for providing essential services to residents in the unorganized territories within county lines.

Following Adkins’ departure, the commissioners are actively seeking to fill the position and are considering appointing an interim administrator to ensure continuity in leadership during the transition.

Adkins could not be reached for comment immediately following the announcement. The county is now focusing on a strategic approach to find a suitable successor who can uphold the responsibilities and commitments essential to the region.
