Penobscot County Administrator Scott Adkins has officially announced his resignation, effective November 7, 2023, as he transitions to a new position. His departure was confirmed by county officials on Tuesday. Adkins joined the county as administrator on September 12, 2022, following a prior tenure as the county’s finance director for nine years and a stint as town manager in Milford.

The county commissioners expressed their appreciation for Adkins’ contributions, noting that his “commitment to Penobscot County has been invaluable.” They particularly highlighted the benefits of his extensive experience in local government, which played a crucial role during his administration.

Adkins began his career in local governance with the finance department before moving to the role of town manager in Milford. He briefly served as the county administrator for Hancock County in 2016 before returning to Penobscot County in 2022. His diverse background has enabled him to effectively manage various aspects of the county’s operations.

The commissioners are currently assessing the next steps for the county’s leadership. They are considering appointing an interim administrator while they search for Adkins’ permanent replacement. The Penobscot County government is responsible for a range of services, including the county jail, sheriff’s office, registry of deeds, and probate court, as well as services for residents in unorganized territories within county borders.

Adkins could not be reached for comment immediately following the announcement. His upcoming role and details about his new position have yet to be disclosed. As Penobscot County navigates this transition, officials are focused on ensuring continuity in governance and services for the community.
