New Podcasts from UW Alumni and Faculty Spotlight Community Voices
Several new podcasts produced by alumni and faculty of the University of Washington (UW) are set to launch in Fall 2025, providing fresh insights into community, culture, and well-being. These shows aim to foster dialogue and connection among listeners while highlighting diverse perspectives and experiences.
Indigenous Jazz Celebrates Cultural Heritage
Broadcast through Daybreak Star Radio, a station located at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center in Seattle’s Discovery Park, the podcast “Indigenous Jazz” merges the rich tradition of jazz music with Indigenous culture. Hosted by Markus Dekanogisdi Teuton, a UW student of Cherokee descent, the show features a vibrant mix of Indigenous jazz legends alongside emerging artists, such as the Seattle-based jazz-funk collective Khu.éex’. The program airs every Thursday at 15:00 and Sunday at 12:00, inviting listeners to explore the fusion of musical styles and cultural narratives.
At-homish: Building Brave Spaces
The “At-homish” podcast, created by Wil Johnson, the chief diversity, equity, and inclusion officer for Snohomish County, focuses on fostering safe environments that promote community well-being. Now in its second season, the show features discussions with civil servants and community members dedicated to cultivating relationships that help everyone feel at home. By sharing personal stories and insights, the podcast aims to inspire listeners to engage more deeply with their communities.
Meanwhile, “In the Meanwhile,” a collaboration between journalist Marcus Harrison Green, founder of the South Seattle Emerald, and Nora Kenworthy, a professor at UW Bothell, dives into the post-pandemic experience. The podcast examines how to navigate uncertainty and discomfort without losing touch with our shared humanity. This engaging series encourages listeners to find common ground amid the complexities of modern life.
The Appetite: Conversations on Health and Body Image
Co-hosted by therapist Kara Bazzi, UW alumni Dr. Lexi Giblin, and dietitian Julie Church, “The Appetite” podcast offers insightful dialogues on topics related to food, body image, and psychological well-being. This show, produced by the co-founders of Opal: Food+Body Wisdom, a Seattle-based eating disorder treatment center, features conversations with healthcare professionals and covers a wide array of themes, including women in sports, diet culture, and the impact of perfectionism. Recent episodes have also addressed the growing popularity of weight-loss drugs, providing listeners with valuable insights into health trends.
These podcasts represent a diverse array of voices from the University of Washington community, each contributing to a broader conversation about culture, health, and the importance of belonging. As they launch in Fall 2025, listeners can look forward to engaging discussions that highlight the richness of shared experiences and the power of storytelling.
