West Aurora’s Mason Aguirre Delivers in Dramatic 3-2 Win
UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, Mason Aguirre led West Aurora to a nail-biting 3-2 victory over Oswego East in the Class 3A regional semifinal on October 21, 2025. With his high school career on the line, Aguirre scored twice and converted the decisive penalty kick, propelling his team into the finals.
As the clock ticked down, senior forward Mason Aguirre felt the urgency. “I was just thinking I needed to do something,” he said. “I’m a scorer and I’m the one in charge.” With less than five minutes remaining, Aguirre’s goal in the 76th minute equalized the match, setting the stage for a dramatic shootout after the teams ended regulation tied at 2-2.
West Aurora, now with a record of 14-7-1, will face third-seeded Plainfield Central (17-6-1) in the regional final on Saturday at 10 a.m.. The stakes were high, and Aguirre delivered, converting one of four successful penalty kicks that sealed the 4-2 shootout win.
Sophomore midfielders Jacob McPhee and Isaac Ruiz scored for Oswego East, who had previously defeated West Aurora 1-0 in their season opener. Ruiz’s goal in the 71st minute threatened to upset the Blackhawks until Aguirre’s equalizer turned the tide.
Teammates praised Aguirre’s leadership and dedication. Senior goalkeeper Luis Garcia said, “I had faith in him that he was going to do something to change the game.” Aguirre, who leads the team with 13 goals, has embraced the role of captain, eager to take charge in crucial moments.
“I was a little nervous at first, but I also know at the end of the day, it’s just a game,” Aguirre reflected on his penalty kick. “I had full confidence in myself.” His determination and work ethic have been evident throughout the season, and he seeks to end his high school career on a high note.
Aguirre’s younger brother, Gavin Aguirre, noted the competitive spirit they’ve shared since childhood. “I had all the faith in him because this is what he has always been about,” he said. This shared history fuels Mason’s drive to succeed, both for himself and his team.
Standing at 6-foot-1, Aguirre combines size and skill, viewing the game through a strategic lens. “I see the game like math,” he explained. “I look at the whole field. I know who’s best at what they do.” His analytical approach, coupled with his experience, positions him as a key player in upcoming matches.
Looking ahead, Aguirre is aware of the weight of his final games. “This might be my last chance. It’s do or die, and I need to go into every game at 100%,” he emphasized. As West Aurora prepares for the regional final, all eyes will be on Aguirre to see if he can continue his remarkable performance and lead his team to victory.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Blackhawks aim for a championship title with Aguirre at the helm.
