Director Rian Johnson is shifting gears from his successful Knives Out franchise to explore a new project that will incorporate light science fiction elements. Johnson, known for his unique storytelling techniques, has confirmed that his next film will not continue the Knives Out saga but will instead draw inspiration from the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s.

In an interview with Empire, Johnson described the upcoming film as a blend of genres, stating, “If I had to define it genre-wise, I’d say it harkens back to the ’70s paranoid thrillers. It’s got a light sci-fi element to it.” This description suggests a departure from traditional sci-fi tropes, focusing more on psychological and suspenseful narratives.

Johnson has a history of engaging with the sci-fi genre, notably with his acclaimed film Looper, which featured a complex time travel plot. His current work on the hit series Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne, also incorporates fantastical elements, showcasing his ability to blend realism with imaginative storytelling. In reference to Poker Face, Johnson noted, “It’s definitely superhuman in that it’s beyond reality in terms of what humans can do,” indicating that his creative range spans various interpretations of sci-fi.

Despite his enthusiasm for new projects, Johnson remains connected to the Star Wars universe, a franchise that has significantly shaped his career. He expressed a deep affection for the series, saying, “That cog will be turning the rest of my life. I love Star Wars, and if someday it makes sense to come back to it, for both of us, it would be the most wonderful thing in the world.” His comments suggest that while he is exploring new narratives, he is not closing the door on future opportunities within the beloved galaxy far, far away.

As excitement builds for Johnson’s next film, he remains focused on the creative process. “The most exciting thing right now is this idea I have in my head for the next thing I’m gonna make,” he stated. This commitment to following his creative instincts leaves fans eager to see how his vision unfolds.

Before Johnson’s new project hits theaters, audiences can anticipate the release of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The film will debut in select cinemas on November 26, 2023, before becoming available on Netflix on December 12, 2023. As Johnson transitions to this new venture, his unique style and storytelling prowess will undoubtedly continue to resonate with audiences and critics alike.
