Mackenzie Dern Claims UFC Strawweight Title, Defeats Jandiroba
BREAKING: Mackenzie Dern has secured the vacant UFC women’s strawweight title, outperforming Virna Jandiroba in a thrilling unanimous decision at UFC 321. The fight, held on October 21, 2023, showcased Dern’s impressive evolution in striking, with judges scoring the contest 48-47 and 49-46 in favor of the new champion.
Emotions ran high as Dern celebrated her victory alongside her six-year-old daughter in the Octagon. “This feels amazing,” she exclaimed, her eyes filled with tears of joy. The title was previously held by Zhang Weili, who vacated it in preparation for her upcoming bout against flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko in November.
In their rematch, Dern demonstrated significant improvements in her striking compared to their first encounter in December 2020, where she won a striking-heavy battle. Jandiroba entered UFC 321 on a five-fight winning streak, hoping to disrupt Dern’s momentum with tactical takedowns. However, Dern was well-prepared, consistently winning exchanges with a staggering total of 247 significant strikes compared to Jandiroba’s 152.
“We knew the striking was good, but I wish it was better,” Dern said post-fight. Despite her grappling prowess as a former ADCC world champion, Dern’s refined offensive skills made the crucial difference in this matchup.
The fight unfolded with Dern opening aggressively, landing powerful leg kicks and punches. Although Jandiroba managed to take Dern down multiple times, she struggled to capitalize on those opportunities, allowing Dern to return to her feet and continue her striking assault. By the end of the fight, Jandiroba showed visible signs of damage, with swelling under her right eye from Dern’s relentless jabs.
While Jandiroba succeeded in landing some effective punches, it was not enough to sway the judges. Dern’s ability to mix both striking and grappling showcased her versatility and determination, improving her record against Jandiroba to 2-0.
“This wasn’t the fight I expected. I thought it would be a little easier,” Dern reflected. “I know she would get the takedowns, but we did a little bit of everything in the cage.”
As the new champion, Mackenzie Dern not only adds a significant title to her career but also reinforces her status as a top contender in the UFC women’s division. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as she prepares to defend her title in the near future.
Stay tuned for more updates on the implications of this historic victory and what’s next for both Dern and Jandiroba in the ever-evolving landscape of mixed martial arts.
