UWS Volleyball Sweeps Road Matches, Dominates UMAC Rivals
UPDATE: The Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets volleyball team just wrapped up a stellar weekend, sweeping both of their road matches in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) without losing a single set. On Saturday, October 21, 2023, in Mankato, the Yellowjackets defeated Bethany Lutheran with a commanding 3-0 victory (27-25, 25-17, 25-20), showcasing an impressive team hitting percentage of .317.
Makenna Hohbein led the charge with a match-high 13 kills, supported by teammates Sidney Bader and Katlyn Jones, each contributing 9 kills. Defensively, Savanna Hering made her mark with 15 digs, while Hohbein and Gabi Schwirtz both added 9 digs to the mix.
The Yellowjackets had an equally dominant performance the previous day, easily sweeping Martin Luther 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-14) on Friday, October 20, 2023. Hohbein once again shined with 15 kills, and Bader added 9 kills. Hering amassed an impressive 24 digs, with Hohbein and Alaina Wilberg each recording 10 digs.
With these victories, UWS improved their record to 18-8 overall and 7-1 in the UMAC. They are set to face North Central on Friday and Northwestern on Saturday, both crucial matches in their push for the conference title.
In men’s soccer, the Yellowjackets also emerged victorious, defeating Minnesota Morris 4-0 on Saturday. Jake Kidd opened the scoring early in the match, netting a goal in the third minute. Despite dominating possession and outshooting Morris 31-3, UWS struggled to extend their lead until Taylor Moore scored two quick goals just before the 70-minute mark. Jordan Aultman sealed the win with a late goal.
On Sunday, however, the team faced a setback, falling 1-0 in a nonconference match against Gustavus Adolphus. They managed only three shots on target, unable to recover from a goal scored in the 55th minute.
The UWS men’s soccer team now stands at 12-6 overall and 10-0 in the UMAC, gearing up for a pivotal match against league co-leader Bethany Lutheran this Friday.
In women’s soccer, the Yellowjackets rebounded from an early deficit on Saturday to defeat Minnesota Morris 4-1. After conceding a goal in the ninth minute, Niamh Larson equalized in the 35th minute, followed by Kamryn Hill scoring shortly after. Brynn Johnson and Brook Judnick added goals in the second half, showcasing UWS’s offensive strength with 11 shots on target compared to Morris’s two.
With a current record of 8-5-4 and 7-0-3 in the UMAC, the Yellowjackets are in a tight race for the conference title. They face Macalester in a nonconference match on Tuesday, before concluding the regular season with crucial home games against Bethany Lutheran and Martin Luther.
