Macklin Celebrini Named NHL’s First Star After Stellar Week
URGENT UPDATE: Macklin Celebrini has been named the NHL’s First Star of the Week following a remarkable performance that has revitalized the San Jose Sharks’ season. Celebrini, just 19 years old, recorded 15 points in nine games, including 10 points in his last four games, leading the Sharks to a 6-5 overtime victory against the Minnesota Wild.
After a dismal start to the season, the Sharks are beginning to find their footing. Celebrini’s recent contributions have been pivotal, as he aims to lift the team from the NHL’s basement. “I’m playing with really good players,” Celebrini said after his standout game. “You have to give credit to your linemates. They support you, and they’re the ones making the play.”
As the Sharks prepare for their next home game against the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, Celebrini is on a four-game point streak, showcasing impressive skills with five goals and five assists during this span. The Sharks have now secured two wins in their last three games, marking their highest point total at this stage of the season since 2021-22.
Celebrini, who leads all Canadian-born forwards in scoring, is also setting his sights on a potential spot in Canada’s Olympic roster for the 2026 Winter Games in Milano-Cortina. With fierce competition, including established stars like Mark Scheifele and Nick Suzuki, making the final cut will be a challenge. Olympic rosters must be submitted by December 31, 2023.
The Sharks’ offensive output has shown significant improvement with 29 goals scored in their first nine games; however, defensive struggles remain a concern as they sit last in the league for goals allowed per game, averaging 4.67 goals against.
“Especially after the start we had, that’s huge, getting those points, figuring out a way to win both those games,” Celebrini remarked after the recent win. “Tonight, they got on us and scored a couple of lucky ones. So, I thought we did a great job just staying with it.”
In a heartwarming moment after the game, Celebrini met with Luke Schumann, a young fan who has inspired him. Schumann, a cancer survivor, has developed a special bond with the rookie, who attributes part of his success to Schumann’s support.
Meanwhile, Sharks veteran Tyler Toffoli is set to reach a personal milestone, playing his 900th NHL game against the Kings. Drafted by Los Angeles in 2010, Toffoli’s impressive career includes crucial contributions to the Kings’ Stanley Cup run.
With the Sharks showing signs of life and Celebrini leading the charge, fans are eager to see if this momentum can be sustained. Stay tuned for more updates as the Sharks continue their quest to rise in the NHL standings.
