Gonzaga’s Tyon Grant-Foster Wins Court Ruling to Play Now
URGENT UPDATE: Gonzaga forward Tyon Grant-Foster has received a crucial legal victory, allowing him to play for the Bulldogs this season. A Spokane County judge ruled in favor of Grant-Foster’s preliminary injunction just minutes ago, overturning the NCAA’s earlier denial of his eligibility waiver.
This ruling is a game-changer for Gonzaga as they prepare for their season opener against Texas Southern on November 3, 2023. Grant-Foster, who has overcome significant health challenges, is now positioned to impact the court immediately. The NCAA had initially ruled that Grant-Foster’s time at Indian Hills Community College and Grand Canyon counted as his four years of eligibility. However, his legal team successfully argued that he should receive an additional year due to a blanket waiver granted to junior college transfers last December.
The 6-foot-6 forward has a compelling story. After playing two seasons at Indian Hills, Grant-Foster transferred to Kansas, where he played 22 games in the 2020-21 season before moving to DePaul. Tragically, he collapsed in the locker room during his first game with the Blue Demons in 2021 and underwent multiple heart surgeries, sidelining him for over a year.
Returning to the court in the 2023-24 season, Grant-Foster shone at Grand Canyon, earning WAC Player of the Year honors with impressive averages of 20.1 points and 6.1 rebounds. He led his team to its first NCAA tournament victory, showcasing his resilience and talent.
With today’s ruling, Grant-Foster can take to the court alongside Gonzaga’s preseason All-WCC first-teamers Graham Ike and Braden Huff. The Bulldogs are eager to bolster their lineup with Grant-Foster’s skills and experience, making them a formidable contender this season.
As Gonzaga approaches its exhibition game against Western Oregon, which began shortly after the court ruling, fans are buzzing with excitement. This development not only enhances the team’s prospects but also highlights Grant-Foster’s inspiring journey back to competitive basketball.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Bulldogs gear up for the upcoming season, and witness how Grant-Foster’s story continues to unfold on the court.
