Major Police Operation in Rio de Janeiro Results in 64 Deaths
A significant police operation in Rio de Janeiro on September 5, 2023, has resulted in the deaths of at least 64 individuals, including four police officers. The operation targeted organized crime, specifically the Comando Vermelho (CV) gang, according to security officials who spoke with CNN Brasil. The raid has drawn attention for its intensity, with videos showing fires and gunfire in the area.
The Brazilian government stated that the operation had been in preparation for over a year and involved more than 2,500 military and civilian police personnel. In a social media update, the Rio de Janeiro Police Department reported that at least 81 people were arrested during the raid, which was aimed at combating the “territorial expansion” of the CV gang.
Details of the Operation
The scale of the operation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in Brazil. During the raid, authorities reported that gang members used drones to target police officers in the Penha Complex. The state government shared a video that purportedly shows a drone firing a projectile at police, indicating a disturbing trend in the tactics employed by criminal organizations.
Rio de Janeiro State Governor Claudio Castro addressed reporters, noting that the death toll may rise as the operation continues. He described the situation as representing a shift from common crime to what he termed “narco-terrorism.” Castro called on residents in the affected neighborhoods to stay indoors during the operation, emphasizing the seriousness of the ongoing conflict.
Authorities also reported the seizure of at least 42 rifles during the operation, further underlining the firepower of the criminal groups involved. The state government reiterated its commitment to combating crime, stating, “Despite the attacks, security forces remain steadfast in the fight against crime.”
This incident marks one of the deadliest police operations in recent years, raising concerns about the methods used by law enforcement and the ongoing violence in the region. As the situation develops, authorities are expected to provide further updates on the aftermath of this large-scale operation.
