Suspect Identified in SoCal Deputy’s Killing Amid Statewide Mourning
UPDATE: The suspect in the tragic shooting of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Nuñez has been identified as Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47, from San Bernardino. This shocking announcement comes as flags fly at half-staff across California in memory of the fallen officer. Saldivar, who was involved in a dramatic motorcycle chase following the shooting, remains hospitalized as formal charges are expected to be filed later today.
Deputy Nuñez was shot while responding to a domestic violence call at a condominium complex in Rancho Cucamonga at approximately 12:37 p.m. on Monday. Eyewitnesses report that as soon as officers arrived on the scene, Saldivar opened fire, fatally striking Nuñez in the head. He was rushed to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:13 p.m. The sheriff’s department confirmed that Nuñez had served the community for over five years and leaves behind a pregnant wife and a young daughter.
A makeshift memorial has emerged outside the Rancho Cucamonga sheriff’s station, where community members are gathering to honor the deputy’s memory. Mourners have been leaving candles, flowers, and heartfelt notes. Among them was neighbor Beni San Tiesteban, who expressed disbelief at the news of Nuñez’s death, saying, “Good man. You know? Good man.” His neighbors also remembered him fondly, sharing a photo from a Dodgers game they attended together.
At a press briefing, Sheriff Shannon Dicus described Nuñez as a “wonderful father” and dedicated deputy, highlighting the profound loss felt within the department. The sheriff confirmed that Saldivar, after fleeing on a motorcycle, was eventually apprehended following a high-speed chase that ended in a crash on the 210 Freeway near Upland. An off-duty narcotics officer intervened during the chase, contributing to the crash that led to Saldivar’s capture.
The shooting incident occurred in the 12300 block of Hollyhock Drive, just north of Victoria Gardens. Authorities report that Saldivar will be booked for murder upon medical clearance, with potential domestic violence charges also being considered.
Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his condolences, stating, “His courage, compassion, and dedication to protecting others reflect the finest traditions of law enforcement.” He emphasized that the sacrifice of Deputy Nuñez will not be forgotten.
In a show of solidarity, over 100 law enforcement officers participated in a solemn procession on Monday evening, escorting Nuñez’s body from the hospital to the coroner’s office. Meanwhile, the sheriff’s department has established a donation page aiming to raise $2.4 million to support Nuñez’s family during this challenging time.
The community continues to mourn and reflect on the tragic loss of a dedicated officer who was committed to serving and protecting others. As the investigation unfolds, many are left wondering how such violence could erupt in their neighborhood, a sentiment echoed by local resident Lanie, who expressed her sorrow, stating, “Can you imagine you are doing your job and you lose your life?”
The situation remains fluid as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident. Local residents and law enforcement alike are coming together to support each other in the wake of this tragedy.
