Toledo Commit Martece Smith Aims for NFL Glory with Morton
UPDATE: Morton senior cornerback Martece Smith is determined to secure a bright future in football as he leads his team into the playoffs. With the sectional semifinals against Merrillville set for 7 p.m. on October 27, 2023, Smith has his eyes firmly set on winning and making a mark in his final high school season.
Smith, a committed athlete to Toledo, is inspired by the success stories of players like Quinyon Mitchell, who was selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. “The goal has always been the NFL, and Toledo has done it before,” Smith stated, showcasing his ambition and the groundwork laid by past players.
As a crucial part of the Morton Governors (6-3), Smith’s performance has been nothing short of impressive. Over two seasons as a starter, he has tallied 48 tackles, including three for loss and two interceptions. His skills in man-to-man coverage have made him an essential player for Morton, and with the sectional title on the line, his leadership is pivotal.
Morton coach Mac Mishler believes in Smith’s potential, saying, “He’s just a great kid who has all the physical tools and the mental capability.” Mishler emphasized that success hinges on Smith’s dedication and daily commitment to excellence, stating that “it all comes down to what Martece is willing to do daily.”
With the sectional championship in focus, Smith expressed gratitude toward his school, saying, “I want to go far this last year with Morton because they’ve done so much for me, and I just want to give back.” The Governors aim for their first sectional title since 2012, and Smith’s presence offers a sense of optimism that has been lacking in previous years.
Smith’s journey to collegiate football is further bolstered by his relationship with Toledo’s cornerbacks coach Perry Eliano. “It was really just the relationship with coach Eliano,” Smith explained about his choice to commit to the Rockets. His confidence in transitioning to the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision is strong, as he stated, “I’m not nervous at all. I’m just excited about getting to learn the game even more.”
Beyond his athletic prowess, Smith is known for his humor and charisma, traits that have endeared him to teammates and coaches alike. His fellow teammate, sophomore wide receiver Ameer Daniels, highlighted the joy Smith brings to the team, saying, “He’s actually really funny, surprisingly.”
As Morton prepares for this critical matchup against the ranked Merrillville team (7-2), Smith’s blend of talent, humor, and determination stands out. The game represents not just a chance for victory but a platform for Smith to showcase his skills and leadership, paving the way for his future in football.
With the stakes high and the playoff atmosphere palpable, all eyes will be on Morton’s cornerback as they aim for victory and a shot at the sectional title. Fans and scouts alike will be watching closely as Smith takes the field, ready to prove that his dreams of the NFL are within reach.
