President Donald Trump concluded his recent tour of Asia without holding a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Despite several public hints from Trump expressing his desire to meet Kim during his visit, the anticipated encounter never materialized. In the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, the absence of coverage about Trump’s Asia trip was notable. According to Justin Martell, an American filmmaker and manager at Young Pioneer Tours, many residents he spoke with were unaware of Trump’s presence in the region. “They weren’t negative about it. They weren’t overly hopeful either,” he noted. This indifference contrasts sharply with the intense media focus during Trump’s previous summits with Kim in 2018 and 2019.

The shifting dynamics between the U.S. and North Korea play a significant role in this change. In recent months, Kim has strengthened ties with both China and Russia, as evidenced by his public appearances alongside Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin during a military parade in Beijing. This newfound alliance has allowed North Korea to bolster its international standing, reducing the urgency for a meeting with the U.S. President.

Trump attributed the failure to meet Kim to “a matter of timing.” He explained that his busy schedule and the concurrent diplomatic mission of North Korea’s Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui made it logistically challenging to arrange a last-minute meeting. Choe was engaged in talks with Putin, which left no opportunity for her to facilitate discussions between the two leaders, unlike their previous encounters.

While the logistical issues played a part, the broader context suggests that North Korea may feel less compelled to negotiate. Kim has publicly stated his conditions for a meeting, insisting on a cessation of what he describes as the U.S.’s “absurd obsession” with denuclearization. In a speech earlier this year, he reaffirmed that North Korea would never trade its nuclear arsenal for sanctions relief, signaling a hardening of positions since previous negotiations.

During Martell’s recent trip to Pyongyang, he observed significant changes in the city since his last visit in 2017. “Now, honestly, Pyongyang feels very much like a modern city,” he remarked, noting the presence of high-rises, QR code payments, and an emerging middle class. This transformation illustrates that despite international sanctions, the living standards for many in the North Korean elite appear to have improved.

The changing landscape is evident not only in infrastructure but also in North Korea’s cultural output. At the recent Pyongyang International Film Festival, Martell attended a screening of a new thriller that featured modern production values and themes previously unseen in North Korean cinema, marking a notable shift in artistic expression.

Despite the silence surrounding Trump’s visit, his influence remains palpable in Pyongyang. Martell observed that Trump’s portrait was still prominently displayed at the International Friendship Exhibition, suggesting that his past engagements continue to hold significance for the North Korean regime.

Looking ahead, Trump has indicated that he remains open to future discussions with Kim. “We’ll have other visits, and we’ll work very hard with Kim Jong Un and with everybody on getting things straightened out,” he stated following his departure from Asia. As both leaders navigate their respective political landscapes, the future of U.S.-North Korea relations remains uncertain, with both sides holding firm to their positions.
