Urgent: Trump’s Gaza Peace Deal Faces Collapse Amid Tensions
UPDATE: Panic spreads within the Trump administration as the president’s ambitious Gaza peace deal teeters on the brink of collapse, according to a report from Axios released today. Just weeks after President Donald Trump announced a historic agreement between Israel and Hamas, tensions have surged with key Israeli leaders openly rejecting critical elements of the plan.
The peace deal, brokered earlier this month, promised a full withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from Gaza in exchange for Hamas’ commitment to release all Israeli hostages, disarm, and refrain from future governance of the region. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly opposed Turkish involvement in a proposed new Palestinian security force, a coalition that would also include troops from Egypt and Turkey.
An anonymous U.S. official expressed grave concerns, stating,
“The Turks were very helpful in getting the Gaza deal and Netanyahu’s bashing Turkey has been very counterproductive.”
This statement underscores the precarious nature of the negotiations as the administration scrambles to maintain momentum.
Adding to the crisis, the IDF conducted airstrikes earlier this week that killed 104 Palestinians in a single night, further destabilizing the fragile peace process. A source involved in the negotiations warned,
“If we don’t have reliable security and governance in Gaza that the Israelis agree to, we will get stuck in a situation where Israel is attacking all the time.”
Critics were quick to voice their skepticism about the viability of the peace plan. High-ranking Israeli officials, including Itamar Ben-Gvir, have publicly opposed key aspects, with Ben-Gvir stating via social media that “with the devil, one is forbidden to make deals.” His sentiments reflect a growing sentiment against the agreement, as he and other ministers vow to continue military operations in Gaza post-hostage return.
Despite these challenges, some Trump officials remain hopeful. They emphasize the importance of careful deliberation, with one senior U.S. official stating,
“It is better to move slow and get it right because we are not gonna have a second chance.”
As October 2023 progresses, the focus remains on whether the peace deal can withstand this mounting pressure. The stakes are high, not just for the parties involved, but for regional stability and international diplomatic relations. Immediate developments are expected, and the world watches closely as this situation unfolds.
