NBA Scrutinizes Betting Amid Scandal, Limits Prop Bets Now
UPDATE: The NBA is taking urgent measures to combat betting manipulation following a major scandal involving player prop bets. Sources reveal that the league is in discussions with sportsbooks to limit wagers on highly vulnerable bets, including those on missed free throws and player fouls, in response to disturbing allegations.
This revelation comes after an indictment against NBA guard Terry Rozier, who allegedly conspired with gamblers to manipulate his game statistics for profit. The scandal has raised serious concerns about the integrity of bets placed on player performance, prompting the NBA to act swiftly.
Before the upcoming 2024-25 season, the league has asked sportsbooks, including FanDuel and DraftKings, to refrain from offering bets on players with two-way or ten-day contracts. The indictment details Rozier’s alleged collusion with a childhood friend, who reportedly sold insider information about Rozier’s plans to leave a game early for about $100,000. This manipulation allowed bettors to place a staggering $257,700 on the under for Rozier’s statistics, raising alarms across the industry.
In a statement to ESPN, a DraftKings spokesperson emphasized the necessity of monitoring suspicious betting activities, saying, “Recent events demonstrate that the regulated sports betting industry is working as intended.” They confirmed that they had previously offered prop bets on player statistics but have since ceased such practices before games.
Additionally, FanDuel stated their commitment to integrity, revealing they do not offer wagers on missed free throws and have collaborated with the NBA to refine their betting offerings. A spokesperson said, “From the start, our collaboration with the NBA has helped us determine what bets not to offer.”
The ongoing discussions among the NBA and its partner sportsbooks also address the appropriate betting limits for vulnerable wagers. Currently, player prop bets typically have lower limits compared to standard point spread bets, but the NBA is seeking stricter controls in light of recent events.
In the wake of the Rozier allegations, the NBA has increased scrutiny on prop bets, which have gained immense popularity, especially in parlays that promise higher payouts. This surge in betting interest creates a precarious situation, one that the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA) warns could push bettors toward illegal platforms that lack oversight. SBA President Jeremy Kudon stated, “A blanket ban on prop bets would create a dangerous blind spot for regulators and leagues.”
The implications of these developments are profound, not just for the NBA but for the entire sports betting industry. As the league continues its work with sportsbooks, fans and bettors alike are left watching closely for further updates. With integrity at stake, the NBA is committed to ensuring a fair playing field as it navigates this complex landscape of sports betting.
