UPDATE: The San Antonio Spurs have made history by achieving the franchise’s first-ever 5-0 start after a thrilling 107-101 victory over the Miami Heat on October 26, 2023. Star rookie Victor Wembanyama led the charge with a jaw-dropping performance, recording 26 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 blocks.

This milestone season marks the Spurs’ 50th anniversary in the NBA, and Wembanyama is determined to maintain the momentum. “It feels great,” he said post-game. “We worked for it. We started this season strong, and we need to keep that streak going.”

The Spurs faced a formidable opponent in the Heat, who entered the game averaging a league-high 131.5 points per game. However, San Antonio’s defense stifled Miami, limiting them to a season-low scoring output, including just 14 points in a critical third quarter.

Despite holding a comfortable 15-point lead at the beginning of the final frame, the Spurs found themselves down by a point after a stunning 17-1 run by Miami, fueled by Bam Adebayo, who scored 12 of his season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter. But Wembanyama and the Spurs demonstrated resilience, executing crucial plays to seal the win.

“That instant, I’m feeling like it’s like the exclamation point when we have [a] 99% chance of winning the game,”

Wembanyama exclaimed, flexing to the sellout crowd of 18,702 fans with just 14.9 seconds remaining. His energy resonated throughout the arena, as he celebrated the historic achievement with teammates.

This victory also marked Wembanyama’s third career game with at least 25 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 blocks, solidifying his place in Spurs history alongside legends David Robinson and Tim Duncan.

Wembanyama is now averaging an impressive 30.2 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks per game, becoming only the second player in NBA history to achieve such stats in the first five games of a season.

Second-year guard Stephon Castle also made significant contributions, scoring 21 points, while Devin Vassell added 17 points and crucial three-pointers late in the game. “Honestly, tired of losing,” Vassell said, reflecting on the Spurs’ past struggles. “Those little things help you win these games, and that’s what happened tonight.”

San Antonio has shown grit, finding ways to win tightly contested games after a dominant opening night against the Dallas Mavericks. Coach Mitch Johnson praised the team’s performance against Miami, highlighting Wembanyama’s defensive prowess in the second half as key to the victory.

As the Spurs continue their season, all eyes will be on Wembanyama and the team as they attempt to extend their historic start. “You can never give up in games like this,” Castle emphasized, underscoring the determination driving the team forward.

Fans are buzzing with excitement as the Spurs look to build on this momentum. Stay tuned for more updates as the season progresses!
