Gary Council Approves Comprehensive Plan to Boost Development
UPDATE: In a unanimous vote on Tuesday evening, the Gary Common Council has officially approved a new comprehensive plan aimed at revitalizing the city. The resolution, passed with one council member absent, signifies a major step forward for Gary’s vision of sustainable growth and enhanced public welfare.
The comprehensive plan, which revises a 2019 document, lays out key strategies for economic development, zoning adjustments, and public safety improvements. City Attorney Marco Molina emphasized its importance: “The comprehensive plan is designed to look for future developments in the city and set policies for land use across the city.”
Public engagement was a cornerstone of this initiative, with two public hearings held on August 21 and September 18. The plan was crafted in collaboration with the University of Notre Dame, leveraging insights from recent studies to address community needs and aspirations.
Council member Tom Cera praised the collaborative effort, stating, “The process itself received a lot of positive feedback, and I think that matters.” The comprehensive plan aligns with the priorities of Mayor Eddie Melton, focusing on stabilizing and growing the population, improving quality of life, and eliminating blight.
The document spans 118 pages and includes ambitious goals such as revising the zoning code and making significant infrastructure improvements. It aims to position Gary as a regional hub for opportunity, specifically benefitting women and minority-owned businesses.
During the public comments, resident Carolyn McCrady expressed her support for the plan but cautioned against certain developments, particularly in B3 zoning, which may allow for trucking facilities that could disrupt residential areas. Her concerns stem from a recent ordinance allowing the rezoning of the shuttered Alfred Beckman Middle School, which has faced community pushback.
In a previous statement, Mayor Melton acknowledged occasional differences with the council but affirmed his commitment to working collaboratively. “Together, I am confident we will identify thoughtful development opportunities that drive sustainable economic growth,” Melton stated.
The approval of this comprehensive plan is a pivotal moment for Gary, setting the stage for transformative changes that could redefine the city’s landscape. Residents and stakeholders are urged to stay engaged as the implementation phase begins, marking a new chapter in Gary’s development journey.
As this story unfolds, further details on specific projects and timelines will be crucial for residents and businesses alike. Stay tuned for more updates on Gary’s ambitious plans for the future.
