Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill affirmed New Jersey’s status as a Democratic stronghold during a campaign event on November 1, 2025, rejecting the notion of Republican momentum in the state. With just days left until Election Day, Sherrill emphasized her confidence ahead of a rally featuring former President Barack Obama, stating, “New Jersey is not a red state… New Jersey is a blue state!”

Sherrill’s remarks came as she faces a tight race against Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli. Recent polling data from Fox News shows Sherrill leading Ciattarelli by 52% to 45%, a margin that falls just outside the poll’s margin of sampling error. This is an improvement from earlier in the month when she held a five-point lead, and an eight-point lead in September.

Polling Dynamics and Voter Enthusiasm

Despite her lead, Sherrill acknowledged that enthusiasm levels among voters could impact the outcome. Among those who reported being extremely enthusiastic about voting, Ciattarelli held a five-point advantage. However, when considering both extremely and very enthusiastic voters, Sherrill edged ahead by four points. The disparity highlights a notable difference in enthusiasm, with 52% of Republicans expressing extreme enthusiasm compared to 40% of Democrats.

Obama, who has endorsed both Sherrill and Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigal Spanberger, is expected to campaign in Norfolk, Virginia for Spanberger before heading to Newark, New Jersey, for the event with Sherrill. His presence is seen as pivotal in energizing Democratic voters as the party seeks to rebound in key elections.

Criticism of Republican Policies

At the campaign event, Sherrill did not shy away from criticizing the current Republican leadership. She described President Donald Trump as “destroying jobs” and accused him of running a “worldwide extortion racket.” Her comments reflect an effort to galvanize support by contrasting Democratic values with Republican policies.

Sherrill passionately conveyed her vision for New Jersey, stating, “It’s not too much to ask to invest in workers. It’s not too much to ask to get a good wage.” She emphasized the significance of the upcoming election, noting that New Jersey and Virginia are the only two states with gubernatorial races this cycle.

With the election approaching, Sherrill called on her supporters to mobilize and ensure their voices are heard. “Let’s get out every vote and let’s show them the power of labor!” she urged her audience, reinforcing her commitment to Democratic ideals in a state she believes will continue to lean blue.

As the campaign enters its final days, both candidates are expected to intensify their efforts to sway undecided voters, making this election a closely watched event in American politics.
