UPDATE: 56 vibrant murals are set to transform neighborhoods across New York State, following a groundbreaking initiative just announced by Governor Kathy Hochul. This ambitious program, known as CHARM (Cultivating Havens for the Arts through Regional Murals), aims to infuse public spaces with creativity and culture through a series of stunning new artworks.

The $1 million state-funded initiative will see murals installed in 21 counties, including locations in the Capital Region and Mohawk Valley. Managed by the New York State Council on the Arts, the CHARM program seeks to turn everyday community spots—like library entrances, theaters, and recreation centers—into open-air galleries that inspire and engage residents and visitors alike.

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of public art, stating,

“Public art has a special way of inspiring people and building community.”

She expressed hope that the CHARM program would create welcoming spaces that encourage exploration and interaction.

Starting immediately, the first wave of projects includes both individual and collaborative murals. Artists are set to draw inspiration from local history, community pride, and the unique landscapes of their respective areas. The designs promise a diverse array of styles, featuring everything from portraits and scenic views to bold, abstract patterns.

Closer to home, the Albany Center Gallery will lead the charge with the creation of two murals in the heart of Albany. Meanwhile, the Saratoga Arts Council is gearing up to produce six murals across the Mohawk Valley, with sites slated for towns like Old Forge, Middleburgh, Gloversville, Oneonta, Canajoharie, and Utica.

All murals are expected to be completed by November 2023, just in time to add new life and vibrancy to these communities. The CHARM initiative not only beautifies public spaces but also fosters a sense of unity and pride among residents, making it a powerful tool for cultural enrichment across New York State.

As these projects kick off, community members are encouraged to participate and engage with local artists, creating a shared experience that will be remembered long after the murals are painted. Stay tuned for updates as this exciting initiative unfolds, bringing color and creativity to neighborhoods throughout New York!
