Salt Lake City’s The Suntrapp Bar Closes Amid Unionization Push
UPDATE: The Suntrapp, a beloved LGBTQ+ bar in Salt Lake City, has officially announced its closure effective October 31, 2025, amid a significant push for unionization. The management confirmed the decision late Friday night, citing the devastating financial impacts of ongoing protests and the current government shutdown.
The Suntrapp has long been a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community, providing essential support and camaraderie for its patrons. In their statement, management expressed their commitment to maintaining operations “in good faith” for both employees and customers. However, they stated, “Sadly, the financial impact of consistent protests has made it impossible for us to remain open.”
The closure comes as the government shutdown has disrupted vital federal services, leaving millions of low-income families in limbo over food and heating aid. This shutdown has also stalled the unionization efforts initiated by Suntrapp employees, who had recently filed for representation.
“The management supported our employees’ rights to unionize and was ready for the next step of a formal vote,” the statement read. However, the closure of the National Labor Relations Board due to the shutdown has halted this process.
As the bar remains shuttered, management is left grappling with uncertainty about the future. “We will do our best to provide an update on the future of the Suntrapp as soon as we have more information,” they stated, acknowledging the strain this situation places on their dedicated staff and loyal patrons.
The Suntrapp’s closure is a stark reminder of the broader implications of the government shutdown affecting communities nationwide. As the situation evolves, many are left wondering what the future holds for this iconic establishment and the vital role it plays in the local LGBTQ+ community.
