SEPTA Expands Red Bus Lanes Across Center City and South Philadelphia
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) has announced the expansion of its red bus lanes to three new areas in Philadelphia. This enhancement will improve public transit efficiency in key corridors of Center City and South Philadelphia, specifically along sections of Chestnut Street, Walnut Street, and Oregon Avenue.
This initiative, revealed on October 23, 2023, aligns with the city’s comprehensive 2021 Transit Plan, which identified these routes as “Tier 1” priority corridors. The designated red bus lanes aim to facilitate quicker and more reliable bus services, benefiting daily commuters and reducing congestion in busy urban areas. The new lanes will be implemented along Chestnut Street between Broad and 21st streets, Walnut Street between Broad and 19th streets, and Oregon Avenue between 5th and Front streets.
Operational Timeline and Further Developments
Work on implementing the new lanes on Oregon Avenue is scheduled to begin on the night of October 23, 2023, weather permitting. The expansion is part of SEPTA’s broader efforts to adapt its infrastructure to meet the growing demands of public transportation and promote more sustainable commuting options. In addition to the new bus lanes, the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA) is set to enhance enforcement of parking regulations in these areas, utilizing advanced technology such as AI cameras to identify vehicles parked illegally in bus lanes.
The initiative is expected to provide significant benefits for public transportation users by reducing travel times and enhancing the overall reliability of bus services. As SEPTA continues to invest in its infrastructure, the expansion of red bus lanes represents a critical step toward improving transit options in one of America’s largest cities.
Philadelphia residents and visitors alike can look forward to experiencing the advantages of these changes as they navigate the city’s bustling streets.
