Couple Turns Dream of Pacific Northwest Home Into Reality
UPDATE: A couple has transformed their dream of owning a vacation home in the Pacific Northwest into a reality by purchasing land and living off the grid. After facing skyrocketing housing prices, Sally Marks and her partner, Carol, made a bold decision in 2022 to buy a 4.6-acre property near Port Townsend, Washington, for $160,000.
The couple fell in love with the region during a visit in 2010, drawn to its stunning landscapes and vibrant community. However, they found that homes in their desired area were often priced over $500,000, putting their dream out of reach. “We wanted to establish roots in the community for several months each year,” said Marks, reflecting on their journey.
In a twist of fate, their real estate agent presented a unique opportunity: a wooded lot with no utilities but excellent access to Highway 101 and reliable cell service. Embracing the challenge of off-grid living, they purchased a 20-foot Airstream Basecamp for $65,000 as their new home.
The couple has implemented creative solutions to thrive in nature. They utilize portable solar panels, collect rainwater for washing, and haul drinking water from a nearby facility. “Living off the grid has been an interesting adventure,” Marks shared. To make life more comfortable, they set up an outdoor tent equipped with a propane stove for cooking and a small pump for washing dishes.
Despite the challenges, the couple has found joy in their new lifestyle. Carol has even joined a local band, using their outdoor tent as a rehearsal space. Their property, though landlocked, allows access to a marina 8 miles away, where they enjoy water activities and facilities.
As they prepare for their winter migration back to their on-grid home in Arizona, the couple reflects on their unique experience. “I’m grateful we’ve found a way to enjoy Washington without the hefty cost of homeownership,” Marks stated.
This story is a testament to how dreams can evolve into reality through resilience and creativity, inspiring others to explore similar paths in the face of rising housing costs. As they spend three to five months each year in the forest, Marks and Carol illustrate that home can be defined in many ways, echoing the sentiment of adventure and community connection in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
