A historic log cabin in Franklin Township, Pennsylvania, has been meticulously restored and transformed into a unique Airbnb property, offering guests a blend of rustic charm and modern amenities. The project, overseen by owner Missy Halko, took over two years to complete, preserving the structure’s historical significance while updating it for contemporary use.

Located at 1134 South Mountain Road, the cabin dates back to the late 1700s or early 1800s, making it a notable fixture in the region’s history. According to Halko, the cabin was built on land owned by the Heikes family, one of the first settler families in the area. There is evidence suggesting that the cabin may have served as a refuge for enslaved individuals on the Underground Railroad, providing a critical escape route through the dense woods surrounding the property.

The restoration process involved extensive renovations, with certain elements of the original structure retained for authenticity. It took months to carefully dismantle and rebuild sections of the cabin, ensuring that key features remained intact. Improvements included new foundation supports, a roof, and a welcoming front porch. Local artisans were engaged to repurpose materials, such as a vintage 1930s Matthew Engman wood stove and original floorboards, which were incorporated into the design.

Modern Amenities Meet Historic Charm

While the cabin maintains its historical allure, significant upgrades were made to its mechanical systems, including new electrical wiring, plumbing, and heating and cooling systems. The exterior features a combination of preserved wood siding and new pine shiplap, all stained a modern black to enhance the cabin’s aesthetic appeal. The interior underwent an extensive transformation, including drywall installation, tiling, and a comprehensive painting effort that took considerable time.

Guests will find open ceilings on the first floor, showcasing original floor joists and hand-hewn log walls that harmonize with the weathered wide plank wood floors. Modern updates were subtly integrated into spaces like the kitchen and laundry area, where a gas ILVE Italian stove and a vintage-style Iio refrigerator add functionality without compromising the cabin’s character.

The second floor features two spacious bedrooms, one of which has retained its original form, complete with exposed beams and antique hardware. The adjacent bedroom offers a more contemporary feel with a cathedral ceiling, while both rooms are designed to provide comfort and a sense of history.

An impressive outdoor pavilion extends from the cabin, providing additional space for relaxation and dining. Designed to accommodate up to eight people, the pavilion includes a gas grill, a propane fire pit table, and even a 65-inch television. Notably, some of the pavilion’s supports are constructed from upcycled electric poles, further emphasizing sustainability in the renovation.

The property also features a well-appointed backyard, complete with a picnic table, hot tub, and fire pit, all set against the backdrop of a serene pond.
