Central Texas Local Races Head to Runoff Elections December 13
UPDATE: Central Texas is gearing up for runoff elections on Saturday, December 13, 2023, as several local races failed to produce a majority winner. With preliminary results in, voters in key municipalities will see a second round of voting for critical positions after no candidate secured more than 50% of the votes.
In Buda City Council District C, candidates Kimberly Goodman and Jeffrey Morales are set to battle again after both received approximately 43% of the vote, closely followed by Emily Jones with 14%. Goodman fell just 75 votes short of an outright win, highlighting the competitive nature of this race.
Moving to Kyle, the mayoral runoff will feature Robert Rizo, who obtained 42% of the votes, facing off against Yvonne Flores-Cale with 32%. Rizo missed the threshold for an outright victory by 422 votes, setting the stage for a heated contest.
In Kyle City Council District 1, incumbent Bear Heiser and challenger Courtney Goza will proceed to the runoff. Heiser garnered about 40% of the total votes while Goza secured 27%. Heiser was 546 votes shy of avoiding the runoff, demonstrating the close dynamics of local politics.
The Leander City Council Place 3 race will see Natomi Blair and Anna Yelaun advance after Blair received 47% of the votes against Yelaun’s 40%. Blair was 200 votes short of a majority, emphasizing the narrow margins that define these critical elections.
In Pflugerville, the mayoral race will continue between Doug Weiss, who received 47%, and Pat McCord, who earned approximately 35%. Weiss’s campaign was just 246 votes away from securing a direct win.
Finally, the San Marcos City Council Place 2 race will feature a runoff between Josh Paselk and incumbent Saul Gonzales. Paselk received 35%, while Gonzales trailed with 27%. Paselk was notably 1,107 votes short of the required majority.
With these races poised for a decisive showdown in December, local communities are encouraged to prepare for the upcoming elections. Voter engagement will be crucial as these candidates vie for critical positions that impact the lives of residents across Central Texas.
