New Law Mandates Sealed Medical Marijuana in Vehicles Now

UPDATE: A new law in Oklahoma requires drivers to keep medical marijuana products sealed and out of reach, effective immediately. Failure to comply could result in significant penalties, including an open container charge.

Officials confirmed that the law prohibits any unsealed medical marijuana products from being transported in the front seat of a vehicle. Passengers are also forbidden from consuming marijuana products while in a moving vehicle. Senator Darrell Weaver (R-Moore), the bill’s author, emphasized that the responsibility falls squarely on the driver.

“This law sends a clear message: you cannot have anyone smoking in your vehicle,” stated Aaron Brilbeck from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office. He highlighted that many drivers mistakenly believe presenting their medical marijuana card grants them immunity from the law.

Under this new regulation, drivers must store medical marijuana products either in the back seat or the trunk of their vehicles. “What this is about is just being reasonable, and we don’t want impaired drivers on the road,” Weaver added.

Brilbeck also reminded drivers that the packaging of purchased medical marijuana must remain sealed. Any violation can lead to fines and an additional $250 trauma care fee that supports the Trauma Care Assistance Revolving Fund in Oklahoma.
