Knicks Dominate Timberwolves 137-114, Towns Reflects on Trade
UPDATE: The New York Knicks delivered a commanding 137-114 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 25, 2023, but the night was marked by lingering emotions for All-Star big man Karl-Anthony Towns, who still feels the impact of last year’s blockbuster trade.
Speaking after the game, Towns expressed disbelief over his trade from Minnesota, saying, “I’m still stunned. It’s weird.” The Knicks star reflected on his former team donning their retro black jerseys, a nod to the Kevin Garnett era, and noted, “It’s weird to see that Wolves jersey and not see ‘Towns’ on the back of it.”
Towns, who played nine seasons with Minnesota, was traded for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo just before the start of last year’s training camp. The decision shocked many, especially after the Timberwolves reached the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2004, with Towns viewed as a key player alongside Anthony Edwards.
The Knicks saw Towns as a perfect fit alongside Jalen Brunson, while the Timberwolves aimed to reduce salary costs. Despite the strategic reasoning, the emotional ties remain strong. Towns admitted he almost referred to the Timberwolves as “we” during his postgame interview, showcasing the deep connection he maintains with the franchise.
“Built something special there,” Towns noted, recognizing the talent of his former teammates. He keeps in touch with them frequently, connecting “every day, if not every other day,” and shared that many of the plays he once executed are now in the hands of former Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid.
In a memorable performance, Towns recorded 15 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks in 31 minutes of play. His notable plays included a powerful dunk over Edwards, who humorously acknowledged, “He dunked on me today. I didn’t jump, though.”
Despite the defeat, Randle shined with 32 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, leading the Knicks to dominate in the second half.
Both teams aim for greater success this season, with high hopes following their playoff runs last year. Towns emphasized the bond he shares with his former teammates, stating, “It’s deeper than basketball. It’s family.”
This matchup signifies not just a game but a reunion filled with emotional weight and competitive spirit. As the Knicks and Timberwolves look to assert their dominance in the league, fans can expect more thrilling games ahead.
